“Broad-spectrum light is applied to the surface of the skin, targeting melanin. This light travels through the skin until it strikes the hair shafts or the bulb (root). The bulb is usually where the highest concentration of melanin is located. As the light is absorbed, the bulb and most of the hair shaft are heated, destroying the hair-producing papilla. It is also claimed that heat conversion occurs directly in the darker capillaries that bring blood to the follicle.
At any one time, not all hair follicles are ‘active’, and only active hair follicles can be affected by the treatment. ‘Inactive’ hair follicles can be treated as they become ‘active’ over time. For IPL treatments, an average of 8–10 treatments are required to remove most visible hair. [14]“
At Face Doctors Remuera we are able to offer the most advanced treatment using our Medical SHR IPL Multiplatform machine, proven to treat unwanted hair safely on most skin types. In order to ensure the best outcome, you may be asked about your medical history and skin type in order to estimate the results you should expect from your customized treatment program.
Hair-filled follicles lying below the surface of the skin selectively absorb highly controlled Laser energy. The absorbed light heats up the hair, which damages or destroys the regrowth potential of the follicle. All without damaging the surrounding tissue.
Any hair with at least some pigment in it (black, brown, red and even blonde) can be treated effectively.
A cold gel (similar to ultrasound gel) will be spread over the treatment area. You will be asked to wear dark glasses to protect your eyes from the bright light. The Laser hand piece is then applied to your skin and pulses of light begin disabling your unwanted hair. When the gel is removed, much of the hair is wiped off with it. The remaining hair in the treated area falls out over the next week or two.
Each pulse of light feels like a slight sting or pinch, similar to the snap of a rubber band. No local anesthesia is required and most people tolerate the treatment well.
Results are varied depending on your skin type and colour and also what areas are being treated.
Laser technology has been proven to create a permanent reduction in the number or regrowing hairs following each treatment in most skin types. The number of treatments required depends on several factors related to your specific kind of hair and skin. A customized treatment program will be designed for you along with an estimate of how many treatments you may need in order to meet your expectations.
Our Laser machine is superior in comparison to other IPL machines so we are able to get a superior result in fewer sessions. During your consultation we will take into consideration your personal details and we will work out your own individual treatment plan. On average we recommend 3-6x treatments but depending on your situation you may require more.
For each individual we need to complete a thorough consultation to discuss if Laser Hair Removal is the right hair removal method for you. Most of the time Laser Hair Removal is recommended and safe on all skin types as long as there is pigmentation in the hair follicle.
Our Laser has a long wave length which reduces the chance for any pigment damage that other IPL Hair removal lasers may have with using a short, more superficial laser wave length. Our Coolguide head piece helps with and discomfort and cooling each treated area. This will be discussed more in-depth in the consultation.
You may experience some slight reddening or local swelling at the treatment site, but this typically goes away within hours. On occasion, some blistering or bruising may occur, but typically resolves quickly. Burns may occur if your treatment isn’t calibrated correctly to your skin type, we ensure that this is done at every treatment.
In addition to this, the skin can become darker or lighter following treatment, but will generally return to normal within a few weeks. Limiting sun exposure before and after will minimize the risk of complications.
Following the treatment, you can generally return to work and resume most regular activities immediately, although spray tanning, swimming, or working out is not recommended for the next 24 hours.
