What are Dermal Fillers?

Historically, dermal filling was done using a permanent (or semi-permanent) form of collagen which was injected into the face to augment the loss of volume or to soften the fold and wrinkles associated with the ageing process. 

More recently, advances in dermal filling technology have produced Hyaluronic Acid Gel fillers which produce more natural results and have a far more favorable safety profile than the old Collagen Fillers or even the still used semi-permanent and permanent fillers. These products are not reversible, whereas HA Filler is completely (and instantly reversible). If you are not satisfied with the result, we can dissolve the product and your appearance immediately returns to its pre-treated state.

HA Gel Fillers come under a variety of Brand names and are produced by different companies using different manufacturing processes. We only use Scientifically-proven and very safe, dependable HA fillers. You should be very careful and understand the product being used before allowing it to be injected – this is YOUR face!

Where can you get Dermal Fillers on your face?

  • Lips augmentation for a more kissable pout, stop lipstick from seeping beyond the lip line, reduce or remove smokers lines or other peri-oral lines, hydrate and volumize the lip. We do not believe in creating a ‘trout pout’ or duck face. Lips should be sensual and appealing, not dominating your face!
  • Around the eyes to reduce the appearance of tired looking eyes, reduce the black circles on your eyes, address the tired appearance caused by the ageing process.

What do Dermal Fillers do?

Dermal Fillers are great for adding volume, lifting sagging areas and filling in deep skin folds and depressions. They rejuvenate and freshen our faces.

As we age our cheeks unfortunately start to slide down our face, this causes hollowing under the eyes, and a deepening of the fold that runs from the outside nostril to the corner of the mouth. As a consequence the corners of our mouths turn downwards, the marionettes deepen and jowls form. Fillers are great at adding volume to lips, around the eyes and at lifting cheeks, marionettes and jowls, and filling in the deepening folds around the nose and corners of the mouth.

Your skin consists of two layers known as the epidermis and the dermis. The epidermis, or outer layer of the skin, acts as the skin’s primary defense against the environment. The dermis, or innermost layer of the skin, is composed primarily of connective tissue and provides the skin with a support network. Most facial wrinkles and deeper nasolabial folds occur within the dermal layer of the skin.

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a naturally occurring molecule. Much like a sponge, its primary function is to bind and absorb water, which creates volume in the face. In this way, Hyaluronic acid can be thought of as the body’s internal moisturizer. But, as we age, HA diminishes, which contributes to the presence of lines and folds. HA injectable gel works to correct this by restoring hyaluronic acid in your skin, helping to diminish wrinkles and nasolabial folds.

HA dermal filler is a nonsurgical, physician-administered treatment for nasolabial folds and other facial wrinkles. Using a fine needle, your healthcare professional eases dermal filler under the skin to fill the soft tissue of the dermis. This adds volume and diminishes the appearance of wrinkles and nasolabial folds instantly.

Are Dermal Fillers safe?

Adverse events include infection, blocked blood vessels which is a significant event, and a poor or unsatisfactory outcome. We have all seen lips that have been overdone. Dr Morunga is a Fellow New Zealand Society of Cosmetic Medicine, is experienced ,and has performed well over 5,000 Dermal Filler treatments. As part of his safety armoury and if required he can dissolve away Dermal Filler, meaning treatments are reversible, increasing the safety margin considerably.

Depending on the type of Dermal Filler, they may last 9 to 18 months.
