The Face Doctors PRP Hair Growth Treatment Program is designed to use the magic of our own blood platelets to release growth factors that stimulates hair follicles for thicker healthier hair that delivers lasting improvements in hair growth for both men and women
The treatment involves first anaesthetising the area, then blood is drawnfrom the arm and centrifuged, the resulting plasma which is rich in platelets is then taken and activated to release growth factors that are injected in defined areas and specific volumes into the scalp. These growth factors stops hair miniaturising and stimulates exiting hair follicles to become healthier and larger producing more robust hair.
PRP usually works best in people who have started noticing their hair thinning in the last 2-3 years and for best results 3 treatments are usually recommended 4-6 weeks apart. Once you have reached a level you are happy with top ups can be made every 6-12 months.
What does the treatment involve?
A small collection of blood 20mls, is taken and processed to give us the PRP required for your treatment. This is done by placing your blood in a centrifuge for 8 minutes separating the plasma and platelets from your red blood cells.
The concentrated source of autologous platelets within the plasma contain numerous growth factors that stimulate tissue regeneration, hair growth and remodelling. After application of a topical anaesthetic the PRP is then injected into your scalp, much like having other cosmetic injections.
The entire process is performed at Face Doctors and takes about an hour. Results take around 2-3 weeks to see and a series of up to 3 treatments is recommended 4 weeks apart.
Where does PRP come from?
Your blood is rich in red blood cells, white blood cells and plasma. We use only the plasma portion of your blood. A special process is used to obtain the PRP.
Expectations & Aftercare
After your PRP treatment, initially you will see swelling from the treatment itself, this will gradually subside. For the first 2 weeks there is minimal change. Results become more visible around the 3-4 week period as platelets stimulate growth factors, this improvement will continue over the ensuing months. Minimal improvement occurs in persons with heavy alcohol, tobacco or drug usage as these patients harvest poor platelets.
PRP Health and Safety Information & FAQ's
How to prepare
Best results are obtained in those individuals who
Do not smoke
Avoid excess alcohol and drugs
Avoid aspirin and antiinflammatories such as nurofen and voltaren 2 weeks before and 6 weeks after treatment
Avoid Omega 3, Vit E supplements, Ginko Baloba for the same amount of time as aspirin and antiinflammatories
Duration of PRP
After 3 treatments, a repeat treatment should be done within 2 years. This is because once tissue is regenerated and remodeled with this effect being long lasting, we unfortunately continue to age, and with time the problem areas begin to reappear.
PRP is 100% your own cells (autologous) and therefore there is no risk of allergy, or rejection. PRP is inherently safe. PRP is suitable for all skin tones and can be used in pregnant and breast feeding patients
Minimal swelling bruising and redness for 12-24hrs
Possible bruise at puncture site, visible for a few days
No allergic reaction as PRP uses your own blood
Who Cannot Have PRP
Smoke. The tar from cigerettes in particular inhibits growth factor production.
Drug and heavy alcohol use
Platelet or Clotting disorders (Platelet Dysfunction Syndrome, ITP)
Acute or Chronic Infections
Severe systemic disease e.g malignancy, chronic liver pathology
On anticoagulant or antiplatelet therapy eg. aspirin, warfarin, dipyridamole, clopidogril
Other Things You Should Know
Not suitable for advanced signs of aging, wrinkling and scarring therefore a patient with this profile may require a combination of treatments.
Note results may vary for individual patients.
Hair loss can happen for a variety of reasons, and can range from being mild to severe. In association with THE HAIR CLINIC a Hair Regrowth Program has been developed.
