The PRP Hair Growth Treatment Program has been developed to use the magic of our own blood platelets to release growth factors that stimulates hair follicles for thicker, healthier hair that delivers lasting improvements in hair growth for both men and women.

The treatment involves anaesthetizing the area of concern, drawing blood from the arm and centrifuging it. The resulting plasma - which is rich in platelets - is then taken and activated to release growth factors into the scalp by injecting defined areas with specific volumes tailored to your needs. These growth factors stop hair miniaturizing and stimulates existing hair follicles to become healthier and larger, producing a more robust hair pattern.

​PRP usually works best in people who have started noticing their hair thinning in the last 2-3 years. For the best results, 3-6 treatments are usually recommended 4-6 weeks apart. Once you have reached a level you are happy with, top ups can be booked in every 6-12 months for maintenance.

A Deeper Understanding of Platelet Rich Plasma

Your blood is rich in red blood cells, white blood cells and plasma. We use only the plasma portion of your blood.
​​A small collection of blood is taken and processed to give us the PRP required for your treatment. This is done by placing your blood in a centrifuge for 8 minutes, separating the plasma and platelets from your red blood cells. 
The concentrated source of autologous platelets within the plasma contain numerous growth factors that stimulate tissue regeneration, hair growth and remodeling. After application of a topical or local anesthetic, the PRP is then injected into your scalp, much like having other cosmetic injections.  
The entire process is performed at Face Doctors and takes about an hour. Results take around 4-6 weeks to see with a series of 3-6 treatments recommended 4 weeks apart. ​

Hair Loss in Women

Hair loss in women can be triggered by a few specific conditions females may face during the course of their life. These include postpartum hair loss, peri or post-menopausal hair loss, and PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome). These conditions tend to affect the hormone levels drastically, acutely affecting the hair growth cycle. Hair loss can also be a genetic problem, passed down through the generations. PRP works to target these issues to stimulate new hair growth, whether they are genetically or circumstantially predisposed.

Expectations & Aftercare

After your PRP treatment, initially you will see swelling from the treatment itself - this will gradually subside. For the first 2 weeks there is minimal change. Results become more visible around the 3-4 week period as platelets stimulate growth factors. This improvement will continue over the ensuing months. Minimal improvement occurs in persons with heavy alcohol, tobacco or drug use as these habits tend to harvest poor platelets in patients.

How to prepare

Best results are obtained in those individuals who

• Do not smoke
• Avoid excess alcohol and drugs
• Avoid aspirin and anti-inflammatories (such as Nurofen and Voltaren) 2 weeks before and 6 weeks after treatment
• Avoid Omega 3, Vit E supplements, Ginko Baloba for the same amount of time as aspirin and anti-inflammatories

Duration of PRP

After your course of PRP, a repeat maintenance treatment should be done within 2 years. Although the hair becomes regenerated and remodeled with long lasting effects, we unfortunately cannot stop the natural aging process - and with time the problem areas may begin to reappear - but we can lower its impact.

PRP Safety

PRP is 100% your own cells (autologous) and therefore has no risk of allergy or rejection. PRP is inherently safe. PRP is suitable for all skin tones and can be used in pregnant and breast feeding patients.

Side Effects

• Minimal swelling bruising and redness for 12-24hrs
• Possible bruise at puncture site, visible for a few days
• No allergic reaction as PRP uses your own 
  blood

Who Cannot Have PRP 

• Smokers - the tar from cigarettes in particular inhibits growth factor production.
• Drug and heavy alcohol use
• Platelet or Clotting disorders (Platelet Dysfunction Syndrome, ITP)
• Hypofibrinogenaemia
• Acute or Chronic Infections
• Severe systemic disease e.g. malignancy, chronic liver pathology
• On anticoagulant or antiplatelet therapy eg. aspirin, warfarin, dipyridamole, clopidogril

Other Things You Should Know

• Not suitable for advanced signs of hair loss, recommendation is then  SMP or Scalp Mircopigmentation
• Note results may vary for individual patients.
